You already know you need to get
oil changes
regularly to keep your car in top shape. You might not know that an occasional change in the type of oil can help your engine. A lot of people hear rumors about bad things happening when you change oil type. Those rumors are mostly myths that have no basis in reality. So long as you do it right, it is perfectly fine to change oil type and improve your engine’s protection against friction and overheating. Many people also change oil viscosity to a lower weight for cold wintertime travels and hot summertime heat.
Ignore Oil Change Myths
There are a lot of myths regarding a change in oil type. One of the most widely spread is a false claim that you will void the factory warranty if you change oil type
. The manufacturer does not void warranties when you change the type of oil used in your car. The manufacturer recommends you use oil that contains a particular viscosity range. It does not tell you which brand, specific viscosity, or even whether you should use synthetic, non-synthetic, or a blend. Carmakers know the people who buy their cars best know the conditions in which they drive. So long as you get an oil change regularly, the carmaker will not care about the type.

Some Oil Types Offer Special Protection
Car oil comes in many varieties and viscosities. You can use fully synthetic oil that has specially formulated additives. Those additives give special protections that can be especially helpful. You also can use semi-synthetic oils, and standard oil as you prefer. Some cars benefit from a change in oil type, too, as it gains more mileage. Some oils are specially formulated to work on cars with more than 75,000 miles on the engine. Those oils are made with consideration for the wear and tear an engine endures with that many miles of travel. So long as you pick a good oil that meets manufacturer viscosity recommendations, you should be fine when you change oil type.
