How Long Can You Go Without an Oil Change?

Knowing how long you can drive between oil changes is a gray area for most drivers. Most manufacturers’ manuals will suggest every 3,000 - 5,000 miles, but as humans, we can sometimes be forgetful. So what happens if you forget to have your oil changed, or you just aren't sure when to have it changed again?

Driving on Low or Bad Oilchange motor oil

There are a number of things that can go wrong under your hood if you’re driving with low or old oil. Oil is the lubrication that keeps all the parts in your engine working properly and absorbs heat to keep your engine from overheating and malfunctioning. Like all parts, oil needs to be replaced or replenished. Old oil becomes sludgy, doesn't effectively lubricate the engine, and has a negative effect on your fuel economy. Signs of driving with low or bad oil include
  • • Knocking or loud engine noises
  • • Oil light or check engine light comes on
  • • Excessive exhaust smoke
  • • Oil smell inside the cabin of your vehicle
