Why Is My Car Leaking?

Have you noticed that your car is leaking fluid recently? If so, more than likely, it's hard to pinpoint where the fluid is coming from. Keep reading to discover how to identify the color of the most common fluids that leak and ways that United Tire & Service can help.

Most Common Fluids that Leak

  • Red - Typically, red fluid means that either your transmission or power steering pump is leaking. While there is a wide range of potential root why is my car leaking water causes, the most common is a faulty transmission seal or a hole in the return line of the power steering system.
  • Orange - The color orange is a combination of rust and antifreeze coming from a leak in the radiator or somewhere within the cooling system. There can be several contributing factors and requires a cooling system check to detect the exact cause. Green or yellow fluid can also be an indication of a coolant leak if rust is not a factor.
  • Blue - Although it's rare, seeing blue fluid is an indication of a less-serious problem, such as windshield washer fluid leaking. The cause most often is a loose hose clamp located on the windshield fluid reservoir or the reservoir itself may be leaking.
  • Clear - When clear fluid is leaking, generally, that’s a good sign. Clear fluid is merely water and indicates that condensation is developing from the air conditioning system, and that’s perfectly normal. However, an A/C check will provide an accurate assessment.
  • Dark or Light Brown - A common reason for seeing either dark or light brown fluid is because of motor oil leaking. With that being said, either color could also mean brake fluid or gear fluid is leaking, depending on the age of the fluid. These are very serious leaks and should be immediately assessed by a technician.
NOTE: Refer to your owner's manual for how to check the fluid levels of those mentioned above or contact us for assistance.
