The automatic transmission is one of the most important assemblies in your vehicle; it’s responsible for taking the torque from your engine and getting it to the wheels, while shifting through gear ratios that are appropriate for a given speed. It’s also one of the most complex and expensive to repair should it fail.
Automatic transmissions are a combination of gears and mechanical assemblies along with hydraulic circuits that help move torque through the unit. It relies on automatic transmission fluid (ATF) to cool and lubricate internal parts while transferring torque through hydraulic pressure.
ATF, like motor oil, will break down and degrade over time, losing its lubricating properties and picking up contaminants like tiny metal shavings and varnish. If left too long, it can actually clog the tiny hydraulic passages in the unit, causing some real problems.
It’s also important to note that there are many brands of transmission fluid on the market, all tailored to specific makes of vehicles, with different formulations of additives such as detergents and friction modifiers. Using the wrong brand of transmission fluid for your vehicle can quickly cause damage and even failure to the unit. That’s why it’s important to have ATF flushed and refilled at regular, manufacturer-specified intervals.
