What Is Transmission Fluid?

There are many different types of car fluids, including
transmission
fluid. Transmission fluid is vital for the proper operation of your vehicle's transmission. There are
different types of transmission fluid for automatic and manual transmissions. Every vehicle needs to have its transmission fluid changed regularly, but the mileage at which these changes should take place varies from vehicle to vehicle. Some people attempt to change their transmission fluid themselves, but it is best to go to a professional.
How Does Transmission Fluid Work?
Your vehicle's transmission is made up of several different gears. When your vehicle shifts gears, many components within the transmission move around in a very tight area. Transmission fluid lubricates these components to ensure your vehicle can shift gears smoothly. If your vehicle does not have enough transmission fluid or the transmission fluid is too old, your transmission may not work smoothly. This can result in jerky gear changes. As uncomfortable as these gear changes may be, the potential for damage to your transmission's components is an even more serious problem.
What Are the Types of Transmission Fluid?
There are two main types of transmission fluid, namely manual transmission fluid and automatic transmission fluid. There are also synthetic transmission fluids and special transmission fluids for vehicles with dual clutches or CVT transmissions. However, the majority of vehicles simply use automatic or manual transmission fluid. Cars with manual transmissions need a different kind of fluid because the transmission does not operate as smoothly and the components need more protection. This is why manual transmission fluid is thicker than automatic transmission fluid. The thicker fluid forms a stronger protective coating on the components within a manual vehicle's transmission. While manual transmission fluid has certain benefits, the thicker fluid makes it harder to shift gears. Some modern manual transmissions actually run on automatic transmission fluid. This makes shifting easier, especially in cold climates.
When Does My Transmission Fluid Need To Be Changed?
Each vehicle needs to have its
transmission fluid changed
at different times. Even vehicles of the same make and model may need to be changed at different times if they are driven differently. As a general rule, vehicles should have their fluid changed roughly every 30,000 miles. If your vehicle's recommended maintenance schedule specifies a different mileage, you should follow the schedule. If you are unsure of whether or not your car needs to get its transmission fluid changed, you can take it to United Tire and our team will help you. It is important that you change your vehicle's transmission fluid on-time to ensure that you do not need expensive transmission repair in the future.
