How Long Do All-Terrain Tires Last?

All-terrain tires are ideal for many of the SUVs and pickup trucks in the greater Philadelphia area. They hold up well through four seasons of driving weather. A 4X4 drivetrain with all-terrain tires mounted to the wheels can take you many places other vehicles just cannot go. Still, some wonder: How long do all-terrain tires last? The short answer is all-terrain tires last about 40,000 miles. The long answer is that it depends on many factors. That includes how well you maintain them.

Tire Compound and Build Determine Initial Mileage

Virtually all tires made these days are radial tires. Those tires are made using rubber compounds that are soft, hard, or somewhat in how long do tires lastbetween. The harder the compound, the longer the expected tire life. Softer compounds deliver shorter tire life but often improve traction. Underlying steel belts and other materials used to build radial tires radiate out in all directions from the bead on either side. That helps to strengthen the tire while enabling it to better disperse heat. Long hot summer time drives in particular can take a massive toll on tires.

Maintenance Affects Tire Life

When you buy any kind of tire, the tiremaker tells you how long it should last under normal conditions. How well you care for your tires affects whether or not they can last as long as the tire maker says they should. That means you need to maintain the air pressure and subject your wheels to tire rotation and balancing service at least once per year. That simple amount of maintenance helps to even out wear and tear on the tires while enabling maximum service life.

Driving Conditions Matter

As the name implies, all-terrain tires tackle terrain types of all kinds. Sharp rocks, narrow trails, and all kinds of varying terrain affect your tires differently. If you do a lot of aggressive rock climbing with appropriately reduced air pressure, your tires will be lucky to last have the service life they would under mostly road-going conditions. The same goes for driving in extremely hot environments, like the Desert Southwest. Hotter road surfaces accelerate tire wear and tear.

Alignment Service Maximizes All-Terrain Tires’ Life

Regular alignment checks and occasional adjustments help make all-terrain tires last longer. Our ASE-certified technicians use the latest diagnostic tools to provide two-wheel and four-wheel alignment inspections. If we find any problems, we can correct the alignment to ensure straight and smooth travels. We have aftermarket and OEM chassis and suspension parts to replace any that might be worn out and causing alignment problems.
