Do New Tires Need To Be Balanced?

When you
buy new tires
, do you ever ask yourself “why do I need to have them balanced when they’re brand-new?” Perhaps you think it’s a waste of money. Or maybe you thought they already came balanced. If that sounds like you, then you’re just like many other tire buyers. It’s a reasonable thought until you understand the reasoning for tire balancing. The fact is, in the long run, you’re actually saving yourself money and eliminating interior discomfort while driving. Do new tires need to be balanced? Before we get into answering that question, you must know what tire balancing means.
What is Tire Balancing?
You may have heard it called
tire balancing
or wheel balancing, but either wording means the same thing. The fundamental process is using a computerized machine that identifies the amount of weight that is needed to ensure the tire has an equal balance while you're driving. Although it may appear the tire is perfectly round, there are minor imperfections that need to be corrected in conjunction with the wheel. As tires rotate, some systemic forces and torques periodically cause vibrations, which tire balancing eliminates.
Is There a Difference When Purchasing One Tire Brand Over Another?
The short answer is, no. Although there are certainly tire brands that are considered to be better quality and more durable, the fact is, all brands adhere to the same tire balancing process or the tires will be vulnerable to the above condition. Of course, an exception to this general rule is if your vehicle will be used exclusively off-road. We highly doubt that we're going to see you driving your Hyundai through off-road terrains in Philly. But, if you plan to, please call us first so that we can see. Regardless of the brand, all new tires that will be used on the road should be balanced, without exception.
What Are The Disadvantages of Not Balancing New Tires?
Choosing to buy new tires and then drive without tire balancing is never a good idea. Eventually, there will be consequences for the decision. We're sure you've heard the old saying: “pay now or pay later.” Well, that applies to new tires. The tires will - not might - wear uneven and prematurely, which means that you will need to buy new tires again sooner than expected.
What Do Imbalanced Tires Cause?
Aside from the out-of-pocket expense, there are additional consequences, and they include:
Decreased Fuel Mileage
Shaking or Vibration
Decreased Interior Comfort
Lower Handling Ability
It's important to point out that these are also similar to the symptoms of needing a wheel alignment. However, tire balancing should not be confused with a
wheel alignment
, which is just as important when buying new tires.
