Can I Replace Just One Tire?

Are you faced with the predicament of deciding: Can I replace just one tire? Is that a wise decision? The short answer is, maybe. The team at United Tire & Service can help you decide. Your tires are a critical part of safe driving. Without good tire tread, you put yourself and others at risk on the road.

Why Our Experts Don't Recommend This

Typically, when you’re faced with replacing only one tire, it's the result of an unrepairable situation such as a flat or a blow-out. Unfortunately, not all tires are can i replace just one tirerepairable or worth saving. Replacing only one tire mostly depends on how much tread is remaining on the opposite tire on the same axle. For instance, if the tire that you’re replacing has 2/32 inches of tread remaining or less, it’s no longer safe, but more than likely, the other tire is just as low on tread. The tread depth of brand-new tires is typically 10/32 or 12/32 in inches of tread. Therefore, the safest thing to do is to replace them both.

However, there is an exception to this general rule, and our experts all agree.

When the tire tread pattern doesn’t match the existing tires, there could be an issue with handling and ride comfort. Here is where it gets a little tricky. Often, matching the tread pattern as closely as possible can help reduce those issues. But manufacturers of all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicles recommend that you replace all four tires at the same interval. The reason is that a newer tire will have a much larger diameter than the older tires, which could result in the newer tire spinning faster on dry pavement and cause the AWD system to automatically engage. If this occurs, it could damage the AWD system. For front-wheel drive (FWD) and rear-wheel-drive (RWD) vehicles, the slower spinning tires could negatively affect the traction control and anti-lock brake system by sending false signals to those features.
