What is an alignment?

Like the soles of your shoes on your feet, your tire tread wears differently on each tire. Each tire undergoes slightly different conditions and wear patterns depending on how you drive. Weight distribution, acceleration or braking, and road conditions all play a factor into how your tire tread is worn down. To even out the wear differences on your tires, they should be rotated around to a new position on your car annually.

A proper alignment consists of re-adjusting the angle of the tires so they are perfectly perpendicular to the ground, and parallel to each other. This crucial maintenance routine ensures your tires are making appropriate contact with the road, ensuring your safety, and the safety of others on the road. Proper tire alignments can help you maximize the lifespan of your tires by avoiding premature wear on your tire tread, saving your money in the long run.

How do I know if my tires need to be realigned?

There are a few telltale signs to be aware of that will indicate its time for a tire alignment.

  • Car pulling to the left/right: There is one sure fire way to tell if your car pulls to the right/left.  *CAUTION - PRACTICE IN AN EMPTY LOT WITH NO OTHER VEHICLES OR PEDESTRIANS*  Driving slowly, around 20 mph, with your hands off the wheel. If your car’s alignment is accurate, your car should continue in a straight line. If your car starts to turn, that's an indication of misalignment.
  • Noticeably uneven wear on tires: Take a look at the tires of your car. If you can visibly see uneven wear, its time for a rotation and alignment
  • Steering wheel vibrates at high speeds: If you can feel your car or steering wheel shake when your driving at higher speeds, that is an indication of misalignment.
  • Steering wheel not returning to the straight position: When you take a turn, your steering wheel should naturally want to return to the straight position. If your steering wheel does not, or you have to forcibly return it to this position, you should seek out a proper tire alignment.
