One question we often receive is, "What is the tire break in period?"

 

Breaking in your new tires is not an overnight task. Rest assured, our team is here to let you know how long you should wait to see your new tires break in.

 

Did you know your new tires should be broken in?  There are a few reasons for this and they are mainly for your vehicles long-term safety on your new tires. Think of breaking in tires like breaking in brand-new shoes. You have to wear them around for some time so that they have optimal performance and comfort.

 

The average tire break-in period is between 500 to 700 miles.

 

During the manufacturing process, there is a lubricant that is applied to the mold for your tires. This keeps them from sticking as they are made and allows them to release from the mold without misshaping your tires. During the initial 500 miles of driving on a new tire, this lubricant is rubbed away by the friction of the tire against the road.  Braking and accelerating from a complete stop can feel different as well and should be done mindfully when new tires have been installed. 

 

"Some people believe that performing tricks like a 'burnout' are a good way to remove the lubricant from the tire, but we don't recommend this because it is not safe for your or your vehicle."

 

Our second reason to break them in is because of what your tire is made of. While it may be rubber on the outside, your tire is actually made of several layers of rubber, steel cords, and fabric mesh that give it a greater stability and overall life. When you first begin driving on a set of new tires these compounds are being compressed under the weight and pressure of your vehicle for the first time. They require time to flex and adjust so that they can work together properly for the best performance and ride quality.

 

The most important reason for the break-in period is because your tires will feel different as you drive.  This break-in period, while good for your tires, is also to let you get to know your car again. Your old worn tires may have slid some on the road or they may have had more give as you turn; new tires will not. They have a bit more grip which can force you to alter the way you drive.
