Use current location
Your vehicle is one of your biggest investments, and it’s something you rely on day in and day out to get you where you need to go. Finding the right auto repair shop is a pretty important decision, and it’s one that many people find daunting. Here are some things to consider, though:
Try to go local if at all possible. Businesses turn on relationships and bringing your vehicle to the same locally-owned and –operated shop instead of a big franchise auto shop. A local shop means that the service writer and technicians have a better chance to get to know you and your vehicle, and can spot impending problems and give you a heads up before they turn into real problems.
Talk to the service adviser or manager and find out a little more about the business. Do they use factory-quality parts on every repair job? Will they show you the part that failed after the repair is completed? Do they offer any sort of warranty on parts and service, or does the warranty just go as far as the entrance to their parking lot?
Try word of mouth. Talk to your friends and get their opinions and recommendations. Everyone’s take may be a little different since everyone drives a different make and model of vehicle, but you can at least filter out the bad ones that way!
Go online. There are plenty of resources online that you can take advantage of, such as angieslist.com, ratings in your local newspaper or newsgroups and Cartalk.com’s “Mechanics Files” section. Again, this can really be useful in weeding out the shops you don’t want to do business with.
A word about keeping it local: remember that when you support a local business, you’re also keeping your money right here in your community and not far upstream to some distant bank account. It helps provide jobs and prosperity right here at home. You’re supporting entrepreneurship…doesn’t that feel great?
