Common Dashboard Warning Lights

dashboard lightsHave you ever felt panic when your dashboard lights up? There’s no need! Dashboard warning lights are designed to warn you about issues to take care of in the near future and when you need to get a professional to take a look. Although all dashboards do not look alike, here are some of the most common warning lights that might appear.

What Do These Warning Lights Mean?

These dashboard warning lights are simply placed on your dashboard for your convenience - informing the driver what is going on with their vehicle. If some of them are not turning off after a period of time or aren’t performing as indicated, see a professional.

- Automatic Shift Lock or Engine Start Indicator: press on the break to start the car or get out of neutral.
- Fog Light Indicator: fog lights are on
- Cruise Control: cruise control is on
- Gas Cap: gas cap isn’t tightened

The following dashboard warning lights tell you when there is an issue with your car that needs to be addressed immediately.

- Anti-Lock Brake Warning: issue with the anti-lock brake system
- Air Bag Indicator: issue with your airbag system
- Oil Pressure Warning: oil needs to be changed
- Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS): low pressure in one or more tires
- Coolant Temp Warning: temperature of the system is too high. There might be an issue with coolant level or leaks, fan operation or radiation cap
- Brake System: brake is on, a problem with a braking system or problem with an ABS system
- Check Engine or Malfunction Indicator Light: issue with an engine computer.
- Battery/Charging Alert: voltage in your battery is too low. There might be an issue with battery terminals, alternator belt, or the overall battery condition.

If your car is showing you signs of malfunction, don’t turn away. The faster you see a professional, the cheaper and less painful the repair will be. United Tire offers a variety of services that will ensure your car will receive the best care.
