Tires are an important part of your vehicle. Without them, you wouldn't get very far! But like all parts of your car, your
tires wear
and eventually need to be replaced. There are a few warning signs to look for, but a sure fire way to tell if you’re vehicle is ready for new tires is the 4/32nd rule (or the Quarter Rule). By placing a quarter into several tread grooves across the tire. If part of Washington's head is always covered by the tread, you have more than 4/32" of tread depth remaining, meaning your tires starting to wear down and it might be time to start looking for new tires. In the state of Pennsylvania, tires are within legal wear limits if they have 2/32” of tread remaining. However, as a tire wears it's important to understand that tire's inability to perform properly in rain and snow.
How long do tires last?
Here is the honest answer – it depends. Driver’s habits, road conditions, tire’s design and care, and the climate all have an effect on how long your tires will serve you. But there are a few guidelines to help you out:
• Tires need to be inspected by a professional every year after they hit their 5-year mark.
• After 10 years since the manufacture date, tires should be replaced as a precaution.
• If you take care of your tires, you can increase the tire’s lifespan. This includes getting regular vehicle maintenance,
tire rotations
, and keeping a correct air pressure.
When to Change Tires? What Are the Signs?
Tires are designed for the most important job – stopping the car. The better the tires are, the better they grip the road, the shorter your stopping distance is. Think about all the times your tires saved you – when a pedestrian was crossing the road in the wrong spot, when the car in front of you hit the brakes abruptly, or when you were driving in the rain or snow. To keep your tires in tip-top shape, look out for these signs:
• Your wheel is vibrating as you are driving
• Your tires are over 5 years old (with time, rubber becomes weaker and is more susceptible to wears and tears)
• Your tread depth is 4/32 of an inch or below (2/32 of an inch is the absolute minimum)
• Your tires are bulging and cracking. Tires are becoming weaker and can blow out any moment!
If you pick up on any of these warning signs, or you try out the quarter test for yourself, don’t wait! Tire health plays an important role in the safety of your car’s performance.
