How do I check tire tread depth?
There are three simple ways to check the tread depth of your tire.
The Penny Test
– put your penny into the tread. Lincoln should face you and be upside down. If his head is fully showing, then your tread depth is too shallow, and you need new tires.
The Quarter Test
– repeat the steps above. If the quarter touches Washington’s head, then your tires are still in a good condition.
Tread Wear Indicator
– most tires come with an indicator bar that is located closer to the bottom of the tread groove. If the tire levels with the bar, then it’s time for tire replacement.
What is a safe tire tread depth?
Your tire tread depth needs to be above 4/32 of an inch to ensure safe driving.
What is a new tire’s tread depth?
New tires come with a tread depth of 10/32 to 11/32 of an inch. Some tires, such as winter tires, off-road tires, or light truck tires have a little more.
Why should I check the tire tread depth?
Tire treads ensure that your car is able to grip the road. With time and mileage, your treads wear down. The more shallow your tread depth is, the longer it takes for the car to stop, and the more your car is susceptible to slipping and sliding.
Additionally, worn tires cause other vehicle parts to wear out. Getting
tire replacements
in a timely manner will ensure your safety and save you money.

What does my tire wear mean?
If your tread grooves are more worn out in the center than on the outside – your tires are overinflated.
If your tread grooves are more worn out on the outside than in the center – your tires are underinflated.
If there’s uneven tread wear – you may need a
wheel alignmen
t.
If there’s a lot of tire wear on one side compared to the other – your camber angle is incorrect.
How can I prolong a used tires’ tread life?
Some driving habits might be speeding up the wear of your tires. Avoid:
Sharp starts and stops. Accelerate slowly and brake beforehand so your tires can gradually shift to the desired speed.
Sharp turns. This is especially important if you are driving at a fast speed.
Driving on bad roads. Being careless about hitting bumps and potholes will definitely get you in the shop quicker for a
new set of tires
.
Driving at high speeds on elevations.
