BMW Warning Lights

The team at United Tire and Service knows that sometimes, it can be hard to keep up with maintenance, but your BMW makes it easy! BMW warning lights let you know when it’s time to get your vehicle serviced as well as any other routine maintenance needs. Whether it's an oil change, new headlight, replacement brakes, or engine coolant—your dashboard lights do an excellent job at alerting you when your BMW needs some TLC.

Why Trust a BMW

No one can deny the reliability of a BMW, and whether your BMW is brand new or you’ve trusted it for years, your vehicle is important to you and performing the BMW factory scheduled maintenance is important to maintain your investment. You can find maintenance recommendations for your specific BMW model in your owner’s manual, but your vehicle makes it easy to know when something is wrong with their various dashboard warning lights:

Warning Lights

When your dash lights up like a Christmas tree, it can be concerning. Some lights are easy to recognize, but others can leave you questioning what is going on with your car. Let's go over some of the BMW warning lights you may encounter as a driver.

airbag system Airbag System (Red)

Belt tensioners or airbag system is malfunctioning—meaning your airbag might not deploy if you are in an accident. This is an issue you’ll want to address immediately. Your airbag is one of the most important safety features on your BMW.

ABS - Antilock Brake System (Yellow)ABS dashboard light

The Driver Stability Control Systems, including tire pressure monitoring and ABS, have failed. You can still drive but drive cautiously and brake earlier than normal. It is recommended that you get your vehicle serviced sooner rather than later.

battery Battery (Red)

This is one of the most common lights you might encounter while on the road. It's simple, something is wrong with your battery. This could indicate a loose connection or your battery is dead.

Steering Lock Fault (Red) steering lock

If you see this particular light illuminate, it means your steering wheel is locked, and cannot be moved. Thie helpful light lets you know that you're safe, as this feature helps prevent your vehicle from theft.

vehicle service indicator Vehicle Service Indicator (Red and Yellow)

If this signal lights up in red, your service is overdue and you need to schedule a service appointment. You can call your local United Tire and Service to schedule your appointment!

Tire Pressure (Red and Yellow)tire pressure sensor

You might see this light more often than others, especially when the seasons change and temperatures fluctuate. If the light turns on red, it means your tire had deflated rapidly and you should stop driving at the safest possible time. If the light is yellow, it means your tire has lost about 10% of its air pressure. You can safely continue to drive but should address the issue when possible.

BMW Warning Colors

Your BMW has different color warning lights to indicate a “threat level”. Red warning lights are the highest threat and demand immediate attention. For example, if the engine temperature or oil pressure light turn on, the vehicle needs to be stopped immediately (as soon as that can be safely accomplished) and should not be driven any further. Yellow warning lights are less threatening but are no less important. While it may be safe to continue driving the vehicle, you must be aware of important issues that come along with those specific warning lights.
