Warning Signs of Tire Failure

tire failure
Your tires play an important role in getting you where you need to be as well as the overall safety of your car. They are specially designed to grip the road in various weather conditions so you can accelerate and decelerate safely. Tire failure is never something drivers want to worry about, but it’s a real possibility for everyone. Accidents happen, but knowing warning signs of tire failure can help drivers avoid this unpleasant scenario and keep your tires in optimal condition so they last a long time.

Symptoms of Bad Tires

tire failure

  • Uneven or Excessive Tread Wear
    • Treadwear like this can be caused by over or under inflation of the tire, as well as not having your tires balanced or aligned properly. Uneven and excessive tread wear shortens the overall life of your tire and leaves you more prone to getting a flat tire
  • Cracking or Cuts
    • Over time, the rubber your tires are made out of will dry out and crack. This can often be avoided by making sure your tires are properly inflated and by avoiding the use of cleaning chemicals (these sometimes cause tires to dry out more quickly)
  • Bubbles or Bulges
    • These are spots where your tire will be especially weak. Tires with bubbles or bulges are more prone to blowing out.
  • Excessive Vibration
    • Shaking or vibration while driving is a sign that you have unbalanced tires or misaligned tires, but it could also be a sign of something more serious.

When inspecting your tires for any of these warning signs, don't forget to check the spare too! Too often, drivers neglect proper care of their spare, and when it comes time to use it, they discover that it’s not useable. This is never a good situation to be in and can be avoided by showing a little attention to the spare tire occasionally. Check your spare tire every time you get an oil change to make sure it’s properly inflated and shows no signs of damage.
