Reasons Your AC Is Not Working

There are very few features that provide a more pleasant driving experience during summer months than the
air conditioner
. As you're driving, the comfort of cool air adds to the overall driving enjoyment, especially long distance driving. If the air conditioner in your car or truck stops working for no apparent reason on a very hot day, unfortunately, that means an uncomfortable driving experience. And there are common reasons why the air conditioner stops working.
System Needs Recharging
Every vehicle that has an air conditioner feature is equipped with a condenser, which contains refrigerant. The air condition system will continue to blow air as long as the blower motor is operating; however, the refrigerant is actually what produces the coolness that you feel throughout the interior. The system could need recharging. A technician who is trained in air conditioning service will recharge the system, after assessing the entire system for any leaks or other causes that are preventing the cool air from reaching the interior. If a leak has occurred, the condenser may need to be replaced.
The recharging process should not be a do-it-yourself task unless someone has been trained to complete the service. Recharging the system without proper training is dangerous and can cause physical harm.
Faulty Air Compressor
Often times, the reason the air has completely stopped flowing or incrementally stops flowing is because of a faulty air compressor. There are a number of causes that can contribute to an air compressor being faulty. A technician needs to analyze the situation in order to come up with the root cause. However, generally speaking, the deficiency could be contributed to one of the following issues:
• Electrical failure
• Blown fuse
• Engine overheating
• Low coolant level
• Air compressor disengaged
Most vehicles that are manufactured nowadays have a computerized system; therefore, if the air compressor is a contributing factor, the computer will automatically shut the air conditioner down. A warning light will show on the vehicle dashboard, and a call to our service department is warranted.
For your convenience, United Tire & Service has 13 locations throughout Pennsylvania, which provide the same friendly, professional and knowledgeable customer service.
General Reasons
United Tire & Service
technicians are able to identify reasons why an air conditioner stops working that are relatively minor and can be assessed at the time of the initial analysis.
Generalized assessments include, but are not limited to:
• Checking the cooling fans to ensure they're operating at the same time as the air conditioner.
• Visually inspecting to see if there is anything obstructing the airflow, such as leaves, bugs or dirt.
• Inspecting the cabin air filter for dirt, grime or any obstruction that may be clogging the pathway.
NOTE:
It is recommended that the cabin
air filter
be inspected on an annual basis.
