Signs of a Bad Timing Belt

The timing belt in your vehicle is an internal component in the engine that works to rotate the engine’s crankshaft and cam, helping to ensure that all cylinders fire at the right time. While the timing belt is manufactured using durable materials, it’s also subjected to significant forces inside the motor, as a result, replacement is eventually necessary.

Do you know the signs of a bad timing belt? Or, when timing belt replacement is needed? If not, keep reading. The information here will help you know when it is time to replace this part.

Engine Ticking

Your timing belt is connected by pulleys to the crank and camshaft. If your timing belt starts to wear out, it can create a ticking sound inside your motor. This is the first warning sign that is going to indicate lower oil pressure or that the engine doesn’t have enough lubrication.
Since the timing belt is so important to your vehicle’s operation, if you notice this issue, then you need to get your car to the mechanic as soon as you can.

The Engine Won’t Turn Over

If your timing belt is broken, then the engine won’t turn over or ignite. If you turn the key, you may begin to hear the alternator try to engage; however, since the timing belt is responsible for operating the crank and camshaft, it isn’t going to turn over.

At this point, your vehicle won’t start—which is a problem. You need to make a phone call to your local United Tire right away. Keep in mind though, if the timing belt is broken, then it could result in internal engine compartment damage. Don’t try to do anything without first contacting our team—they can give you advice on how to proceed.

The Engine Misfires

If your timing belt is worn out, then it can impact the fire rate of your engine. If the belt slips on the camshaft drive and causes one of the cylinders to open or close earlier than it should, it can result in a misfire situation. If this issue isn’t addressed in a timely manner, then it can result in devastating and expensive engine damage.

When it comes to your vehicle’s timing belt, you can’t afford to ignore a problem. Instead, have the issue investigated and fixed right away. The engine is the heart of your vehicle and deserves the same level of care. The team at United Tire & Service can help diagnose the issue and make sure your car is safe and ready for the road. Our technicians are here make sure you always Drive United.
