Goodyear Vs. Michelin Tires

Most modern tires meet similar quality standards for performance and durability. While this is true, there are still some significant differences between premium brands that you should be aware of when you go shopping for replacements. We are going to look at some qualities to look for in a modern tire, and compare two of the most popular brands so you can end the debate if you should try Goodyear or Michelin tires.

1) Overall Performance

This is the performance of the tire in wet and dry conditions. This is the amount of grip and road holding ability the tire offers and affects cornering, acceleration and braking and overall handling safety.
Most of us want a tire that does well under all conditions. Specialty tires that are superb on a smooth dry surface, but will not work at all in the rain will not be a good choice for most of us.

2) Goodyear vs. Michelin: Snow and ice

Even if you live in a sunny warm climate, all season tires are worth considering because many of the characteristics that make a tire a good performer in snow also makes that tire good in heavy rain or muddy conditions. An all-weather tire will have a tread pattern that is aggressive enough to grip in mud, snow or loose dirt and also have wide enough grooves to prevent " Aquaplaning" or floating on the top of puddles.

3) Noise and comfort

Some tires that are specifically designed for rough weather and off-road conditions may be unacceptably noisy or uncomfortable on a day to day basis.

4) Michelin or Goodyear: Reliability

Tire makers are faced with a challenge to balance comfort, road holding, and long life. Some high-performance tires may not have a long life span, and an overly durable compound may not be comfortable. Most makers strive for a balance of these qualities. Your tire dealer can advise you which tire matches your driving style.

5) Cost

The average cost of a P215/60 R16, one of the most popular sizes for passenger vehicles is between $95 and $150 each. Mounting and balancing is usually extra, and individual retailers set their own prices. There are always bargain brands available but be cautioned that the difference between a bargain brand and a quality tire is relatively small and not worth the safety risk.

Now that the basics are covered, let's take a look at two of the most popular brands: Goodyear and Michelin.
Michelin leads in sales at 25 billion in sales in 2018, and Good Year a close runner- up at 15.5 billion.
We will start with two of the popular tire makes and common sizes for a midsize passenger car or crossover vehicle.

MICHELIN

For Michelin, we chose the " DEFENDER" ALL-SEASON
Size 215/60R16 This an all season, standard passenger car tire.

Overall performance and handling

Good overall grip. Better than most. Average grip in snow.

Lives up to the Michelin reputation for handling performance.

Snow and Ice performance

This is an " All Season" tire with good poor weather road performance.

Overall good for an " All Season " tire.

Noise and Comfort

Good comfort and average noise level.

Good all around tire for the average motorist. Combines performance, comfort, and durability

Durability and warranty

Average between 50 and 80,000 miles. Warranty is 80,000 miles. Flat tire warranty available from some dealers.

Generally a long-lasting tire and better than discount brands.

Cost

$121.00 -141.00 depending on the model. This is an above average standard performance tire.

Slightly more than the OEM Continental from the factory. Michelin is a " Premium " brand, with a slightly higher cost.

GOODYEAR

Size: P215/60R16 94V. This an all season, standard passenger car tire.

Overall performance and handling

Good overall grip. Wet weather performance is good.

Better than OEM original equipment tires.

Snow and Ice performance

This is an ” All Season" tire with good poor weather road performance.

Better than average poor weather grip. Overall good for an " All Season " tire.

Noise and Comfort

Very Good comfort and low noise.

Noticeable improvement over factory tires. Quiet and comfortable.

Durability

Average between 50,000 and 65,000 miles. Tire has a 65,000 mile warranty.

Generally a long lasting tire Minimum 40,000 miles and up to 65,000 depending on driving conditions.

Cost

$99.00-$137.00 depending on exact model, which is average for an above average all around tire.

This is an average price and while there are less costly tires available, this is a good price for a quality brand.

Should I Buy Goodyear or Michelin Tires?

Truth be told, there is no clear " Winner".
Overall, in the size and type chosen for this review, Michelin has a slight edge for performance but Goodyear is a winner for comfort and a quiet ride.
The Michelin also has a longer tread warranty of 80,000 miles vs. 65,000 for the Goodyear
