How Often Should Tires Be Balanced?

If you’re like most drivers in Philadelphia, there probably isn’t a great concern for thinking: "how often should tires be balanced?" You get in your car and get where you need to go without any thought about the tires or balancing. And that’s really how it should be. After all, you’re not an expert on tires. That’s why you rely on United Tire & Service to keep you informed. And that’s exactly what we want to do! Our intent is always to provide the type of service and information to keep you and your family safe on the road.
So, here's what we want you to know on how often you need tire balancing!

What Happens When You Get Tire Balancing?

When tires are manufactured, they actually do not have perfect circumferences, and tire balancing is essential to ensure that the weight of the tire is evenly distributed. A computerized wheel balancer is used by a technician to detect the imperfections. It is a relatively minor service and involves the technician placing small weights on the wheel, which are in ounces. The wheel balancer computes precisely how much weight is needed and the precise location the technician should mount the weight on the wheel. The process is repeated until the computer indicates “zero.”

Symptoms of Unbalanced Tires

For most vehicles, the standard recommendation to have your tire balancing checked is every 4,000 to 6,000 miles. An easy way for you to remember this is the change of seasons. A technician may also make recommendations, based on specific driving habits or factors they identify while completing the service. The feedback is vital when asking how often should tires be balanced for your specific vehicle.
There are symptoms that you should be aware of that may indicate your tires are imbalanced, and they include:
  • • Excessive vibration in the steering wheel or floorboards
  • • Tires that are wearing uneven
  • • A decrease in handling ability
  • • Normal driving comfort decreases
  • • Lower fuel economy than normal

If any of these symptoms of unbalanced tires are identified, it’s important to make an appointment with United Tire & Service to get to the root cause. There could be one tire out-of-balance or several. Having the rebalancing completed as soon as possible can prevent you from needing to purchase new tires sooner than expected. Additionally, ignoring these symptoms could interfere with being able to identify other underlying problems such as needing suspension repairs or a wheel alignment.

Common Causes

There are common contributing factors that cause a tire to become imbalanced and a few of them are:
  • • Bumping a curb while parking
  • • Being involved in a fender-bender
  • • Tire balance weights displaced or falling off
  • Hitting a pot-hole or hard bump on the road
It’s in your best interest to have your tires inspected if any of these scenarios occur, regardless of when they were last balanced.
United Tire & Service is pleased to have 13 independent locations throughout Philadelphia to complete tire balancing and resolve your specific situation. We’re proud to be a part of the community, and it’s important to our entire team that we continue to strive for complete customer satisfaction!
