Warning Signs of Battery Failure

It is really easy to overlook your car battery until it dies and your vehicle won’t start. Battery failure is something every car owner experiences at least once. You might leave the lights on while shopping and come out to a battery that is too weak to start your car. Or you might wake up on a cold morning, try to start your car, and find out the battery died in the frigid night air.

The simple fact is your car battery will only last so long before it starts losing its ability to take and hold a full charge. The older your battery is, the more likely it will suffer battery failure during the dead of winter. Sub-freezing winter nights are especially hard on batteries. The colder it gets, the faster the battery discharges its energy. The cold also makes the engine oil thicken, which makes it harder to turn over after sitting for several hours. Sooner or later, a battery failure is imminent.battery failure

Common Warning Signs of Battery Failure

No matter how powerful your car battery is when it is brand new, sooner or later, it will stop taking a full charge. When that happens, your battery is about to die. Thankfully, it tends to give you several warning signs that often appear a week or two before the battery dies. Symptoms of battery failure include
  • Dim interior lights when entering the car
  • When you put the key in the ignition and try to start the car, it might hesitate momentarily before kicking in and turning over the engine
  • If you have to pump the gas pedal to get your car to start
  • If you turn on the headlights and the car gets even harder to start

When the battery weakens so much that the draw from the headlights makes it impossible to start your car, odds are, the battery is about to die. When your battery weakens and starts to go, it no longer takes a full charge. A simple diagnostic check will tell us when your battery will no longer take a full charge. We do that first thing when you come here for battery service. We also check the alternator, cables, and clamps to make sure all is in good working order. If any parts are worn and need replacement, we do that on the spot.
