What's one of the most underrated systems in your car that most people don't think twice about? That's right: your air conditioning system. Your car's climate control system allows you to stay comfortable in your car no matter how extreme the temperatures are outside. Let's go a little deeper and find out exactly how your car's A/C & heating system works.
Importance of Climate Control Systems
While comfort is the main reason why you'd want to have control over the temperature inside your car, there are some more benefits to having this system working. Some of the benefits are:
Prevent moisture buildup in vents
Prevent the growth of mold or mildew
Mitigate deterioration of rubber and plastic accents
Improves aerodynamics
Prevents fogged windows
Healthier air in the interior
What is My Car's A/C System Made Of?
Compressor
The job of the compressor is to pressurize refrigerant which allows it to absorb excess heat and cool the air.
Condenser
The condenser acts as a radiator and performs the job of cooling the hot air. The refrigerant which was compressed becomes a cooler liquid in the condenser as it dissipates the heat.
Evaporator
While the cool liquid is passed through the evaporator, this makes the air that passes through to get cold, right before it returns to the cabin. As the refrigerant warms up again, it's turned into gas and returned to the compressor.
Dryer (Accumulator)
The accumulator (also known as the receiver-dryer) ensures that no liquid returns to the compressor (which can lead to damage).
Expansion Valve
The expansion valve is a component that controls the amount of refrigerant that's released into the evaporator. This is what determines how cold the returning air will be.
Refrigerant
Typically referred to as Freon, this is a specially formulated fluid that is used to transform hot air into cold air. It does so by absorbing and releasing heat easily.
