Every car in Pennsylvania is required to undergo a vehicle safety and emissions inspection. These inspections are required by law to ensure that all vehicles on the road are safe to operate. These inspections can keep you and other drivers safe from dangerous and possibly fatal collisions.
What is a State Inspection?
A
state inspection
is a service that's done to approve your vehicle for safe operation on Pennsylvania roads. This inspection takes a look at your vehicle owner's documentation, exterior, interior and functioning components. The inspector ensures that all parts and systems function correctly and are not in a severely deteriorated condition.
Why Do I Need a State Safety & Emissions Inspection in Pennsylvania?
You're required to undergo a state safety inspection and pass an emissions examination annually by law. Pennsylvania started this program to meet regional air quality goals while focusing on passenger safety. For your vehicle to remain on the roads, you're required to have a sticker visible that states that you passed your inspections.
What Is Checked During a PA State Inspection?
While examinations vary by vehicle type, most passenger vehicles need to undergo an assessment that ensures adequate conditions of the following systems:
Steering & Suspension
Tires & Wheels
Brakes
Auto-Electrical & Lighting
Defrosters &
Windshield Wipers
Speedometer & Odometer
Horn, Headlight, Signal lights & Hazard Lights
Fuel System
Chassis
Engines
Exhaust & Muffler
Mirrors
What Happens if I Fail My Inspection?
If you fail your inspection, you have to get any issues repaired and get re-inspected. You can get your follow-up inspection done for free if you conduct it at the same establishment that you got the first inspection. If you still don't pass your emissions inspection, but you can present receipts that state you spent at least $150 on emission-related repairs, then you can be eligible for a one-year waiver.
How Often Do I Need a PA State Inspection?
You're required to pass an inspection when you first register your vehicle with the DMV. You're also expected to do follow-up safety inspections annually when you renew your vehicle's registration.
