Common Radiator Problems

If you've noticed some of the signs of a bad radiator, you may have one of several common radiator problems. The signs of a bad radiator include:mechanic working on car
  • Overheating: If your engine temperature gauge quickly enters the red zone when you've only just started driving, you may have a bad radiator.
  • Coolant leaks: If you notice a pool of clear or bluish liquid under the front of your car, this may be a coolant leak.
  • Low coolant levels: You should check your car's coolant levels on a regular basis. If you notice that the coolant levels are low soon after you've replenished the coolant, your radiator may be leaking.

If your car is showing one or more of these signs, you may have a radiator problem on your hands. Read on to learn more about the most common radiator issues.

Leaks

Leaks are by far the most common type of radiator issue. Most coolant leaks actually come from the hoses that come out of the radiator. That's because these rubber hoses are prone to failure, especially if they are old
However, the radiator itself does leak from time to time. If you notice that coolant is leaking from your vehicle, you should bring your car into your local United Tire for service. If you simply replenish the coolant, this will only serve as a short-term solution. Even special types of coolant that supposedly fix coolant leaks will not be totally effective. You need to treat the source of the issue as quickly as possible.

Rust

If your car has quite a few miles on it, it is possible for the radiator to get rusty. This problem is especially common for cars that are only driven for part of the year. Even newer cars can have problems with rusty radiators if they are regularly driven in places that spread salt on the roads to prevent winter ice.
A rusty radiator may need to be replaced or it may only need a good cleaning. The solution depends on how bad the rust is. Either way, you must have a rusty radiator inspected by professional automotive technicians so they can determine the right course of action.

Residue Build-Up

Some types of coolant, especially cheap coolants, can leave residue within your radiator. This residue can also accumulate in the hoses that come out of your vehicle's radiator. A little residue is normal and will not cause issues. However, you should get a regular radiator flush to keep the residue from accumulating too much. If there is too much residue, the coolant will not flow to and from your vehicle's engine properly. This can lead to your car's engine overheating. If this happens, the engine may suffer severe damage.

Many radiators, especially modern radiators, use plastic fans. These fans are relatively fragile and can be broken by a minor fender-bender. Some radiator fans, especially those long past their intended service life, will simply break on their own. If your car's radiator fan is broken, your engine can overheat quickly.
