Because transmission fluid loses viscosity over time, changing your transmission fluid on routine periods might protect the life of the transmission itself and prevent some transmission problems. United Tire & Service provides quality budget friendly transmission repair, as well as other various auto repair services.
Transmission Repair Protects the Life of Your Car
The automatic transmission is one of the most complex assemblies in your car…and one of the costliest to repair should it ever fail. Automatic transmissions use a combination of hydraulic pressure and mechanical linkages and gears to get power from your engine to the drivetrain and rear wheels. Newer vehicles use a system of solenoids, relays, and switches to govern transmission function, all dictated by the engine control computer.
The transmission relies on automatic transmission fluid (ATF), a specially-formulated oil, to help with lubrication, cooling and transfer of pressure and torque within the unit. Like motor oil, ATF can degrade over time and lose its lubricating properties. It becomes contaminated with varnish and other sediments as it ages, and buildups of these contaminants on small internal passages can result.
If hydraulic circuits inside the transmission start to become plugged, it can soon lead to transmission overheating and failure.
These are all signs of transmission problems:
- Transmission fails to engage or engagement is delayed
- Transmission slips while driving
- Harsh shifts
- Transmission “gear hunts” from one gear to another while maintaining the same speed
- ATF is dark and has a distinct burnt-toast odor
ATF needs to be changed and flushed at regular intervals, according to your owner’s manual and manufacturer’s recommendations! It’s a sure way to prevent transmission failure or other problems over the life of your vehicle.
Also bear in mind that there are several different formulations of transmission fluid on the market, each with different detergents, friction modifiers, and other additives. Using the wrong fluid can damage a transmission or cause transmission failure pretty quickly!
