Oil Changes in Ardmore, Rosemont and PA

Oil Change Ardmore, Rosemont, Havertown PA

You probably heard it from your dad when you got your first car…”make sure you get your oil changed every 3,000 miles, no matter what!”

But why are regular oil changes so important?

Without having the oil changed at regular intervals, the microscopic metal shavings and carbon, water vapor and acids from normal operation will start to contaminate the oil. Motor oil contains dispersants and detergents that suspend these particles and allow them to be trapped in the oil filter as the oil circulates…but in time, the oil filter becomes too saturated to absorb any more and thick, sludgy deposits will start to accumulate on bearings, valve components, and other internal assemblies.

The “3,000 mile rule” has fallen by the wayside; the additives in newer oil formulations mean that conventional motor oil can easily go 5,000 miles without compromising engine protection. Synthetic motor oil is more expensive, but it outperforms conventional oil in every respect. It doesn’t thicken in cold weather or thin out in summer, and it does a better job of cutting wear and friction and reducing sludge and carbon buildup. While it costs about twice as much per quart, synthetic oil can go for a 10-12,000 mile interval between changes (be sure to consult your owner’s manual for manufacturer’s recommendations).

Everyone knows that it’s easier to head off a problem at Stage 1 with early detection and smart maintenance. In the end, though, the choice is yours. You can spend a little money now for oil changes, or you can spend a lot of money to overhaul an engine that’s worn out at 70,000 miles. Not really much of a choice, though, is it?
If you can’t remember when your last oil change was, just pop the hood and pull the engine dipstick. Clean oil should be amber and translucent. Oil that’s a little darker but still translucent can go awhile longer but oil that’s black coffee-colored should be changed right away.
