You know it’s gonna be cold soon…and you know that winters in Pennsylvania can be tough. Is your car up to it? Here’s a quick list of things to check before the snow flies.
Tires: All-season tires are a jack of all trades, master of none. If you expect more than an inch or two of snow, it can be a good idea to invest in winter tires. Winter tires feature a more aggressive tread pattern to dig into snow and slush (some are even pre-drilled to make it easy to install metal studs). They also use a softer tread formulation that stays flexible in extreme cold for traction.
Wipers: Even good windshield wipers only last about a year before the sun’s UV rays and wear take their toll on them. If your wipers are dried-out, cracked, chipped or are lo ...[more]
It’s October, which means that the holiday season is quickly approaching! United Tire is proudly participating in two community events this upcoming season: A Philabundance food drive and Toys for Tots. Philabundance relies on food drives to provide much needed non-perishable items for people within our communities. Items collected by our stores will be sent to over 350 member agencies and direct service programs within the nine counties that Philabundance services. These agencies include shelters, food pantries, and after-school feeding programs.
Toys for Tots collects new, unwrapped toys and distributes them to less fortunate children as Christmas gifts. The program aims to help those children experience the joy of Christmas each year. Their goal is to unite all members of local communities ...[more]
The thing we love most about living and working locally is being able to be involved in our communities. A number of our locations have been in business for over 20 years now. Most of the members of the United Tire family have put down their roots near our locations long ago and we have raised our own families in the same communities we service. For the month of October, United Tire & Service is sponsoring two upcoming local events to help some worthy causes and support the communities we each call home.
Six Degrees of Delco
Our Concordville location is sponsoring the Six Degrees of Delco event on October 8th. The event celebrates the heritage and community of Delaware County and honors first responders and the heroic services they provide. Proceeds of the event will go to support the Delaware County Heroes Scholarship Fund, the Delaware County Fallen Fire Fighter and EMS Memorial, and the first responders’ training an ...[more]
For years now, Pennsylvania and Delaware have mandated fairly strict safety inspections and emissions testing for vehicles. With the right preventive maintenance, your vehicle shouldn’t have any problem passing either one, but we thought you might want to know a little more about what goes into it.
First, let’s talk about safety inspections.
Safety inspection will cover items such as:
Just to name a few. Unless your vehicle has worn or damaged parts, none of this should be a problem…after all, it really is for your own protection and that of everyone else on the road.
As for emissions testing, modern engine managem ...[more]
It's mid September and the school year has begun! This means that busses and carpools are back on the roads and school zone lights are flashing. Our main priority is safety on the roads, so we want to pass along some reminders to help everyone in the community stay safe as the school year begins. Here are some tips to remember when interacting with school busses or driving through school zones.
When the bus’s red lights begin to flash and the STOP sign is extended, you must stop 10 feet away from the bus. This rule applies if you are stopping behind the bus AND if you’re traveling on the opposite side of the road. The only exception to this rule is if you are traveling on a divided highway, then cars traveling in the opposite direction do not have to stop ...[more]
You probably heard it from your dad years ago – “Get your oil changed regularly! It’s the best thing you can do for your car!” And he was right. Automotive technology has changed a lot in the last 50 years, but one thing that’s still true is that oil changes at regular intervals will insure that your car’s engine will last a long time.
Your engine’s moving parts, like pistons, bearings and valvetrain components, all operate on extremely close clearances with each other. Without the protective film of lubrication that motor oil provides, these parts would quickly overheat and weld to each other, seizing the engine. Oil helps reduce wear due to friction and dissipate heat. Along with friction, however, a great deal of heat is generated by the combustion process, along with car ...[more]
